Heading Out

Do you camp? We do. Do you hunt? We do. This weekend, we're doing both.

We're heading up north a bit, but not so far as the pines. We'll probably camp in the high desert, which is beautiful, but treeless. Well, not completely treeless of course, but I doubt we'll be surrounded by trees. Pickle will have lots of room to run and (hopefully) I'll have lots of time to work on my Bible study and my current cross-stitch project.

As for the hunting, My Man will be responsible for that this trip. He's hunting javelina. What's a javelina you ask?

This, my friend, is a javelina:

Scary, huh? They are related to rodents. They have big teeth. They smell bad. The meat is, in my opinion, inedible. The skulls, however, make for a nice mount if you bleach them first. If you're in to that. My Man is.

Have you ever eaten javelina? My two experiences were both horrible. I've had javelina tamales (Oh, what a waste of good masa and cheese!) and pit barbequed javelina. Eeew!

Thankfully we're blessed know people who like the meat so nothing goes to waste. They tell us they soak it in milk before cooking to tenderize it and improve the flavor. Maybe. I've never tried. I'd rather give it away than risk throwing it away if the milk thing didn't work.

So, we're off for a long weekend in the wilds. I am looking forward to the peace and quiet that comes from leaving (most of) technology behind. No TV, no high speed internet, no DVD player. Just me, my camera, My Man and my Pickle!

What are your plans for the weekend?
